You must have International passport to travel to any country unless you are European traveling within Europe. For me sometimes it is enough to have driving license or age card to go get plane from one country to another withing European Union.

So if you are not European (National of one of EU Countries) you will need International passport and visa (Check if you need one with embassy of the country you are intending to go to)

By the way avoid Ireland & UK at the moment. Pretty harsh over here at the moment. Riots are spreading. Wait for the better time.

Question has been done to death….have you tried the resolved area?? Yes you do need a passport.

Your question confuses me; you question on Y!A United States but use British terms [holiday instead of vacation] and want to go to Ireland and France by ferry. What is your citizenship (what passport do you hold)?

Americans will need a passport for both destinations.

British citizen may travel to Ireland by ferry without a passport; any picture ID will do.

To France a passport is required regardless of the travel mode.

What nationality are you? If you are British or Irish in theory you do not need a passport to travel between the UK & the Republic of Ireland but in practise you will be advised to get a passport. If you are not British or Irish but resident in either the UK or Republic of Ireland you will need a passport & in the case of non-EU nationals some will require a visa to enter both countries.

If you are British or Irish & you want to travel within the EU you will need a passport – most EU countries are signatories of what is called the Schengen Agreement, citizens living in the signatory countries can travel between these countries using only national identity papers. The UK & the Republic of Ireland are NOT signatories of the Schengen Agreement and citizens of both countries must carry passports when travelling within the EU.

If you want to travel outside the EU, you will certainly need a passport & in some cases you will need a visa as well.

For travel from Britain to Ireland by ferry, no passport or photo ID is required. But, for France to Britain, or France to Ireland I would assume some ID is required.

From the UK to Ireland, no, but you’ll need some kinda photo ID. To France etc, yes, you’ll need a passport.
