I’m plotting to travel round Argentina and Chile and find a TEFL job in the process. I’m a native English speaker, have a CELTA certificate plus one year’s experience as an English teacher, but the jobs I see on the internet always seem to mention a universtity degree which I don’t have. Would I be wasting my time looking for a TEFL job in Argentina or Chile?

Have no thought but the only tip I can provide is to look the private sector as they pay better. And what I would do if I were you, I would contact k-12 school and get some feedback from them. You will be surprise how helpful they will be.

CELTA is an brilliant qualification.
Having a degree helps a lot but, yes you could teach without one.
Some language institutes (and a few private schools) may hire EFL instructors with a reputable teaching certificate or diploma and only a high school diploma. Contact them directly.
Still, having a degree means securing a better position.
Excellent luck!

Hi…I def. admire you for this and am very jealous. I am a teacher as well and really have family in Argentina and have looked into doing this myself. I don’t know if you are interested in doing this as a volunteer type trip or a paying teacher position but…there are a ton of volunteer abroad programs where you can teach English to the Natives. You do have to pay for your flight and the program but they usually set you up with a host family, meals and even excursions to go on. There are a ton of programs I found just browsing the internet. I just went to google and typed in volunteer abroad. You will find so many options. It does take some searching though since some only offer programs in certain countries. But I reckon it is a fantastic opportunity and if I was more financially stable right now I would certainly do it myself. So I hope this helps and feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. I also speak Spanish so if you have any translation questions don’t hesitate to question:)
buena suerte…hope this helps
