Should I wear my engagement ring while in Chile?

I am going to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar, Chile, this summer for a 10 week study abroad program. I will be staying with a host family.
When I get back from study abroad, I am getting married less than two weeks later. I really want to wear my engagement ring; it is gorgeous, but I have heard from several people I shouldn’t. They advised that I leave it at home and buy a cheap band to wear instead on that finger.
What are your opinions and experiences with traveling in Chile?

my wife lives in peru and we have both been to Chile. she never wears her ring in public and when i visit i always carry it in the change pocket of my jeans. doing things like wearing your ring and also fancy clothes and sunglasses make you a target. i have $800 prada sunglasses and a Citizen watch i never wear anything like that in peru or Chile. another hint you do not have to be dirty but the more modest you make yourself look the less problems you will have. Cameras and video recorders are a huge NO NO. peru and chile are the same as far as this topic. believe me neither country is a beauty contest and believe me modest is the way to go.
Especially in tourist areas, I would not wear expensive items. I would even be careful leaving things at the host family house if they have a maid. I stayed with a host family in Chile who had just gotten a new maid, and I had some money disappear. That said, most people there are excellent people. I just don’t like taking unnecessary chances.
How’s your insurance?
If you want people to realize you’re engaged, you should wear something on that finger–and do tell people about your “novio” so there won’t be any misunderstandings.
Nahhhhh!!!
