Do you need a passport to travel to Costa Rica?

I am moving to Santiago Chile to teach English. How much money do I need to earn to be able to do some travel

and to rent or share a small apt, etc. I am plotting to stay for a year and will be teaching English. The salaries for this work vary and I don’t know how much money I’ll need per month to live comfortably and without worry. Thanks
