Yes this is right. So it is a excellent thought to have something unique attached to your luggage. I have rainbow color luggage straps myself. The luggage is usually sorted by the luggage tag color, so you only have to fine that, not look through every single piece, but it still may take a while.
All cruise lines do the luggage thing a small different. But, you are given colored tags the night before you get off the ship. The next morning, your colored tags are called and you get off the ship. When you get down to the terminal, your luggage is in the colored areas. You find your luggage in your colored area. You can get a Porter to help you with your luggage. You have to go through Custums and then you walk out.
Hope this helps.
All the luggage is in a warehouse, but it is separated by colored tags, and each grouping is relatively small. They usually have the luggage spread out, so all you really have to do is walk up the aisle and look for your suitcases. Just remember how many you have so you don’t forget anything
Just an FYI: If you don’t have cruise line transfers to the airport [and hopefully you don't], it is well worth the few extra bucks to have a porter handle your luggage and help you get a cab. Much simpler than trying to do it yourself or herding onto the cruise line bus.
The night before while you’re at supper, a luggage tag and information will be left. Be sure to read ALL of the instructions. You attach your colored tag to your luggage and leave it in the hallway by a certain time (11pm). Then in the morning, groups of people are called down according to their luggage tag color. So if your luggage had a tan tag, you stay in your room until they question for all of the people who had a tan luggage tag. You will then proceed to disembark the ship. You will find your luggage. It goes through the same sort of thing that it does at the airport. It passes on a conveyor belt and you have to pick up your luggage and proceed through customs. There are many porters around who are keen to help and make a few bucks. It is not too complicated of a process but it make take some time.
Best of luck, and have fun on your cruise!
I have been on 32 Royal Caribbean Cruises and I can tell you the process on thier line is simple, the person above me clarified it perfectly! But on Carnival it could be more hard. Since we cruise in Suites when we travel in cruises we have personal porters to find our luggage while we wait in customs. Hopefully finding your luggage won’t be too hard!
